Extensions for Google Chrome is one of the main reasons why several users, including myself, prefer them as the default browser. Extensions range from productivity boosters to fun and time-saving. Their best feature is that they sync across all of your devices making them a joy to use. But what if your Chrome extensions suddenly stop syncing? It happened to me recently after I started up a new Windows 10 desktop. It was strange that only 4 out of 9 extensions appeared in sync even though I was using the same Google ID. Yes, I know I should use fewer extensions as they can slow down the PC, but that’s a topic for another day. Let’s take a look at several ways that can help you solve the Chrome extension not syncing error.
1. Check the synchronization settings
Google allows users to decide whether or not to sync extensions and other settings on a particular computer. Maybe the option for the same is unchecked. To check that, click Menu and select Settings.
Click Sync directly below your profile picture.
Here you can manage synchronization settings for individual items such as bookmarks, extensions, search history and so on. You can click the Sync All option to manage these settings individually. In my case, Extensions was enabled.
2. Re-enable synchronization
Now that you know where the sync is, another way to jump-start things is to turn the Chrome extension sync off and on again. That can fix the sync of the broken extensions. To do this, go back to the sync settings as shown in the previous section and click on Sync all.
Now switch extensions off and on once. You can turn the Sync all setting back on. That didn’t affect my extensions. Some users reported that doing that on other computers also helped.
3. Repair or remove extensions
Sometimes the Chrome extensions get corrupted due to an unexpected crash or shutdown. That’s what happened to my computer. It is a device specific problem which means that if the files on one computer get corrupted, it will not affect other devices. To check this, click Menu and select Extensions under More tools.
You will notice an option to fix the extension if Google detects that it is corrupt. Click on Restore button begin.
You can also try removing and reinstalling extensions to see if that works.
4. Developer mode
You may have installed the latest extension update and are not syncing it on your computer. Usually, Google does a great job of pushing extension updates to your computer. However, occasionally things can get confused. To update manually, go to Settings and select Extensions under More tools.
In the top right corner, turn on Developer mode.
You should now see an option to update all extensions. Do it and check if this fixes the problem.
5. Log out and log back in
This old trick can help you fix quite a few Chrome related issues including Chrome extensions not syncing. Open a new tab and click on your profile picture. Click on Logout. Keep in mind that you also sign out of other Google services such as Gmail and Drive.
Repeat the process to sign out of Chrome on all devices you use with the same Google account. To sign back in, you can click the profile icon again or visit a Google service such as Gmail to sign back in.
6. Reset synchronization
Google is aware of the Chrome extensions sync error, it seems, because there is an option to reset sync in your browser. This will not delete data from your computer, only Google servers. The Sync option in Google Chrome shows a list of everything that Chrome syncs from your computer. Scroll to the bottom of the page to find the Reset Sync option.
Once you log in again, all data will be synced again. The same thing also happens when you reset your passphrase. Chrome may not be able to sync extensions due to a passphrase mismatched. If you have set one up, you can try to reset sync.
7. Create a new browser profile
No, we are not creating a new guest user account. All your extensions and other data are stored in a local folder called Default. To find that folder, press Windows Key + E to open Windows Explorer and type the following in the address bar. % LOCALAPPDATA% GoogleChromeUser data
Exit Google Chrome by clicking the menu icon and selecting the option Shut down. Now rename the default folder to backup default or something easy to remember. Restart Chrome and a new default folder will be created. Sign in to your Google account and wait to see if extensions sync again.
8. Reinstall Chrome
Sometimes the best way to fix a problem is to uninstall and reinstall Chrome. To do that, press the Windows key to open Windows Search and type Chrome, right-click on it and select Delete.
Follow the onscreen instructions to delete Chrome and all saved data from your computer. I recommend that youup of the Chrome folder, just in case. Download and reinstall Chrome from the link below. Log in to sync all your extensions again. Download Chrome
