Guide: Fix ‘Windows 10 Taskbar Not Hiding in Fullscreen’ Issue

Using full screen mode in Windows 10 is easy. You don’t want any distractions and you want to focus on the thing in front of you. People usually choose full screen mode while playing games or watching videos. You can perform both activities in your favorite browser such as Chrome, or a video player such as VLC on your PC. Several users face this issue where taskbar is not hidden in full screen mode. That ruins the experience, especially when you can see all those icons with constant notifications making them blink. In either case, we don’t want that. Let’s see how to fix Windows 10 taskbar not hiding in full screen error.

1. Update Windows and restart it

Make sure your PC is running the latest version of Windows. Press Windows Key + I to open Settings and click Update & Security.

If there is an update, you should see it there or you can get it manually by clicking Check for updates buttonIf there are any, I recommend that you install the updates immediately and then try the full screen mode again to see if the taskbar is hiding or not.

2. Try Autohide

Windows 10 offers many ways to personalize your PC, one of which is the ability to automatically hide the taskbar when you’re not using it. This means that the taskbar will only reveal itself when you move the mouse pointer at the bottom of the screen. This is how the desktop appears when the taskbar is hidden.

To do this, open Settings by pressing Windows key + I and click Personalization.

Select Taskbar in the left pane and enable the Automatically hide the taskbar in desktop mode option. Now move your mouse over the bottom of the screen to display it in every window. If you use tablet mode, there is a separate option for that.

Check if you can still see the taskbar in full screen while watching videos or playing games on your computer. You can also quickly access the taskbar settings by right-clicking the taskbar and selecting Taskbar Settings.

3. Use the F11 hotkey

If you’re looking for a quick fix, here’s a simple one trickJust press the F11 key on your keyboard and the window of the app you are using will immediately go into full screen mode.

The F11 shortcut works on all Windows versions. So if you have VLC and File Explorer open, both will hide the taskbar in full screen. On some keyboards (especially laptops), press the Fn + F11 keys. It depends on your keyboard layout and the make and model of your PC. Note: If you’re curious, F stands for function and you can change the function key to perform various tasks.

4. Notification Badges

When you receive a notification, a badge will appear on the icon of the respective app. Ideally, this will not affect full screen mode. But sometimes the taskbar becomes visible. Checking and closing the notification often hides the taskbar back in full screen mode, but that’s not always the case.

Windows 10 has resolved the said action center issue, but the error still occurs up often. You can also try restarting the app that sent the notification to see if that works. If you find a particular app that is often causing this problem, try installing it again to see if the problem goes away. Or you can turn off notifications for the said app.

5. Restart Windows Explorer

Restarting Windows Explorer is a lot faster than restarting Windows 10. It takes a while but cannot hide taskbar error in Windows 10. Right-click on the taskbar and select Task Manager. You can also try the keyboard shortcut CTRL + SHIFT + ESC.

Scroll a bit to find Windows Explorer under the Apps column. Right click on it and select Restart. When you do that, your windows will disappear temporarily and some apps will close. That’s fine. Windows Explorer provides a GUI (graphical user interface) to help us navigate and interact with the Windows file system.

Another way to do that without opening the task manager is to hold down the CTRL + SHIFT keys and right-click on the taskbar. You should now see a new option called Exit Explorer at the bottom.

6. Chrome: Disable Hardware Acceleration

The taskbar also seems to be causing problems for the Chrome users. Do you see the taskbar while watching a YouTube video in full screen? If so, here are a few solutions. Open the Chrome menu and click Settings.

Scroll to the bottom of the screen and click Advanced.

Under the heading System, uncheck the option ‘Use hardware acceleration when available’. You will be prompted to restart Chrome.

Try to go full screen in Chrome to check if the taskbar is hidden or not.

Chrome: use Canary or another browser

Chrome is an excellent browser, but not without its flaws. If the problem persists and you realize it’s Chrome specific, it may be time to check out alternatives. Canary is a browser from Google intended for developers and early adopters. It is known to have a few bugs, but it works fine most of the time. If you can do away with Chrome, there are some attractive alternatives, such as Firefox, Safari, and Opera. Give them a try. Download Chrome Canary

8. Reset Chrome

In a last-ditch effort to hide the full screen Chrome browser taskbar, you can reset your browser to restore it to its original settings. Open Settings in Chrome again and click Advanced at the bottom as you did in step 6. Under Reset and cleaning up, select Restore settings to their original defaults.

Click on Reset settings in the next popupupThis will reset any settings you may have changed after installing Chrome. You can always restore them.
